Ingredients

- 1 whole chicken (about 3–4 lbs), cut into pieces
- 8 cups water or chicken broth
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tbsp butter, melted
Instructions
- In a large pot, combine chicken, water or broth, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, salt, pepper, and thyme. Bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour or until chicken is tender.
- Remove chicken from broth, shred meat, and return to the pot.
- In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in milk and melted butter to form a dough.
- Drop spoonfuls of dough into the simmering broth.
- Cover and cook for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
- Serve hot.
Notes
- Use leftover cooked chicken to save time.
- Add peas or corn for extra vegetables.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
